Reskilling and Upskilling in Global HR: Addressing the Skills Gap

Introduction 

The swift change of technological advancement and changing business environments have created a significant requirements for reskilling and upskilling focused initiatives in the HRM field in order to bridge the skill gaps. Investing in the development of employees' skills and competencies is important for organizations to stay competitive and drive innovation in the globalized business environment. In this blog post we explore the importance of reskilling and upskilling in Global HR and how the skills gap is addressed in today's dynamic workplace.

The Significance of Reskilling and Upskilling

Reskilling and upskilling are two important elements for organizations to stay competitive and adapt to changing skill demands. By conducting skills gap analyses, designing strategic training programs, and fostering a culture of continuous learning HR professionals drive these initiatives. Proactive reskilling and upskilling can future-proof the workforce, boost employee engagement and retention, and achieve strategic objectives of dynamic business environment (TIGI HR, 2024).

Addressing the Skills Gap

The skills gap in the workforce necessitates a proactive, collaborative approach from employers and individuals. Upskilling and reskilling initiatives are crucial for competitiveness and meeting job market demands. By conducting skills gap analyses, implementing programs, collaborating with educational institutions, embracing technology, and fostering a learning culture, organizations and individuals can thrive in a future requiring continuous skill development (Thrive HR Consulting, 2023).

Benefits of Reskilling and Upskilling

Reskilling and upskilling initiatives give many benefits for employees as well as organizations. Employees those who engage in continuous learning can experience increased job satisfaction, career advancement opportunities, and a sense of empowerment. Organizations will have skilled workforce, improved retention rates, and enhanced competitiveness in the global market are the benefits as a benefit of reskilling and upskilling.

Reskilling and Upskilling in Global HR: Connecting with Hayleys Plantations' NVQ Skills Passport Initiative

Hayleys is one of the leading plantation companies in Sri Lanka, with over 44 estates by Kelani Valley Plantations and Talawakelle Tea Estates.

They introduced National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), Sri Lanka’s first-ever National Skills Passport (NSP) programme offered to plantation industry Field Officers in 2022. 70 Field Officers from Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL), Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC (TTEL), and Horana Plantations PLC (HPL) successfully finished the training, which improved their capabilities around sustainable plantations business operations. In order to create a dynamic, technologically savvy workforce, they assisted their team in enhancing their skills and knowledge with the launch of the NVQ qualifications and Skills Passport. The Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Colombo Office, the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), and the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) are the four partners in the NVQ Skills Passport initiative (Hayleys, 2022).

Moreover The NSP online portal connects employees, employers, qualification bodies, and labour market intermediaries, enabling employees to create a comprehensive portfolio of skills, qualifications, and experience, and providing access to reskilling and upskilling opportunities (Hayleys, 2022).

The above initiative serves as a testament to the transformative impact of investing in employee development. By aligning the principles of reskilling and upskilling with the NVQ Skills Passport program, organizations can address the skills gap effectively and empower their workforce for future challenges.

Conclusion

Reskilling and upskilling are two important components of Global HR strategies which helps to address the skills gap and foster a continuous learning and development culture. Organizations can equip their workforce with the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing business environment and drive sustainable growth by prioritizing reskilling and upskilling initiatives.
