Lessons from Pandemics and Financial Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need for HR to adopt flexible work arrangements and prioritize employee health. HR’s role expanded to include crisis communication and managing remote workforces (Gujaran, 2020). Financial crises, such as the 2008 recession, taught HR the importance of transparent communication and maintaining employee engagement during economic downturns (Hamouche, 2021).

Lessons from Natural Disasters

Natural disasters have highlighted how important it is for HR to have effective disaster response plans. It is critical to protect worker safety and enable business continuity. HR is in charge of creating crisis management teams and offering assistance to affected employees (Sanders, 2022).

Ian Mitroff’s Crisis Management Process Model

Ian Mitroff's six-stage model is a widely used framework for crisis management, serving as a valuable reference for crisis managers, HR professionals, and other stakeholders (Gibbons, 2020).

Key Takeaways for Global HR

Preparedness is Key: HR's flexibility and preparedness in times of crisis are essential for maintaining organizational stability and providing assistance to workers amid unexpected events (Hutchins & Wang, 2008).

Communication is Crucial: HR must take the lead in crisis situations by strategically communicating, staying loyal to company principles, and encouraging a culture of transparency. This strategy reduces uncertainty and supports employee trust and morale (Mazzei & Ravazzani, 2014).

Employee Support is Essential: In times of crisis, HR's support systems are essential because they give workers security and care, which is essential for healing and continuity (Darko, et al., 2023).

Conclusion

One of the main duties of Global HR is crisis management. HR experts may ensure an organization's resilience and longevity by learning from past events and preparing for future problems.
