Promote Learning in the Flow of Work to Improve Employee Performance

By Rusky Ahamed

Introduction

The traditional method of employee training is no longer sufficient in current fast-paced work environment. As a transformative strategy, “learning in the flow of work” concept has emerged to enhance employee performance and organizational success (Brandi & Iannone, 2021).

Learning in the Flow of Work refers to the process of gaining new knowledge and skills through work activities. This HR viewpoint explores how learning can be incorporated into regular tasks so that employees can learn and use new abilities effectively.

The Importance of Learning in the Flow of Work

Learning in the flow of work offers several benefits to employee development. It allows for timely application of knowledge, improves engagement, and enhances performance. It addresses the issue of learner time and engagement, allowing employees to access relevant information at their own pace. This approach also leads to increased employee satisfaction, reduced stress, increased productivity, and increased happiness. Additionally, it saves time by reducing the time spent searching for information, allowing employees to focus on applying new knowledge (Cloke, 2024).

How Corporate Training Has Evolved

Over the course of several decades, the corporate training sector has consistently been influenced by technological advancements. We've gone through four evolutions in the last 20 years, each propelled by changes in technology and the economy, as the following chart shows (Bersin, 2018).

Strategies for Implementation

According to Rudy (2022) HR professionals should consider below key strategies to implement learning in the flow of work effectively.

1.Contextual Learning: The relevance and retention of newly acquired skills can be greatly enhanced by customizing learning opportunities to the roles and tasks of the employees.

2.Micro-Learning: Employee learning is made easier when material is divided into small, manageable chunks so that they don't become overwhelmed.

3.Learning Nudges: Consistent, subdued cues motivate staff members to interact with educational resources and utilize acquired information.

4.Reflective Practices: Encouraging employees to reflect on their learning experiences to help understand and strengthen new skills.

Conclusion

HR practitioners who want to improve employee performance must strategically integrate learning into the work process. Organizations can establish a flexible and dynamic learning environment that fosters ongoing development and progress by implementing this strategy.
